Portrait of e-discovery attorney Rebecca Garland. The Washington State Bar Association’s Legal Technology Task Force (WSBA) recently released a report that examines the rapidly evolving influence of AI and other technology on the legal profession, and charts a course for the WSBA in supporting its members and the wider legal profession in the ethical and equitable use of technology.

Pacifica e-discovery attorney Rebecca Garland participated as an ad hoc member of the Task Force, and as a member of its Technology Impact on Courts workgroup.

Attorney and former Mayor of Seattle Jenny Durkan chaired the Task Force, which included WSBA members and staff, judges, members of the public, and contributors from Seattle University School of Law.

The report, “Embracing Change: Strategic Roadmap for Washington’s Legal Profession in a Time of Technology Disruption,” drew on a survey of WSBA members to understand the legal technology landscape and make recommendations to the WSBA Board of Governors on how to support its members and the Washington legal community in responsibly embracing new legal technology.

Among its recommendations, the report encourages the creation of educational opportunities; new rules, standards, and safeguards that govern the use of AI and other technology; and the transformation of legal education. It also calls for leveraging AI to increase access to justice.
